A weekend getaway designed for a family of three. Our clients are minimalists at heart but wanted character and inspiration from their Japanese and Spanish culture, plus a contemporary twist on an Upstate home. By coordinating with their builder on all finishes and working side by side with local makers, we created a dynamic home that ticked all their boxes.
Kitchen
This is a new build by an Upstate developer, and we were given full creative freedom on all finishes and appliances. Because this is our clients' weekend home, they chose open shelving to display their local pottery collection — a nod to their Japanese sensibility toward handmade, quietly imperfect objects, and to the Hudson Valley makers who create them. We kept the budget in check while adding a touch of whimsy with a picket-edged backsplash, and crowned the island with a statement pendant.
Living Room
We wanted ample seating for visitors and cozy nights by the fireplace. To do that, we designed a slatted screen in the same tone as the kitchen cabinetry — a quiet, architectural gesture that echoes the restraint at the heart of Japanese design. Embracing the outdoors and the large windows, we selected and designed low furniture in a palette that's both colorful and neutral, with soft green and camel tones throughout. We commissioned custom furniture and a slatted screen from Hudson Valley maker Phaedo, along with a side table from local maker Kieran Kinsella.
Dining Room
The custom living room screen extends the wall while separating and defining the dining room. It also creates a nook for a custom buffet that doubles as a wfh desk. A Roll & Hill chandelier and an oversized fiber wall hanging from Mexico anchor the room — a piece that carries the warmth and craft of the clients' Spanish heritage into the space.
Primary Suite
Weekend homes should slow you down, so we kept this room minimal and bright — restraint that speaks to the clients' Japanese roots as much as it does to the rhythm of a weekend house. The ensuite bath leans soft and textural, with cottage-style tile against contemporary fixtures. Both artworks in the suite are from artists working in the western Catskills and Woodstock, chosen deliberately to keep the room connected to where it actually sits.
Girl’s Room
We allowed a bit of whimsy here to bring out our inner child. We brought sky blue to the ceiling and transformed a bed into a little house. Bird-cage pendants and playful patterned drapes complete the room, along with a marbled triangle pillow from local maker Christin Ripley.
Second Bathroom
Neutral and textural, with contrasting black and walnut finishes. This room is timeless and built to suit the family for years to come.
