JRN Pottery is at The Beck

I am beyond excited to welcome Josh Nathanson of JRN Pottery to The Beck this season. Josh is a ceramic artist based in the Hudson Valley, creating one-of-a-kind, hand-built pottery that incorporates botanicals, textiles, and found object reliefs into his textural clay objects.

Each piece carries the imprint of the artist’s hands, with varied textures that invite touch and produce a sensory experience that goes beyond basic visual appreciation. The interplay between smooth surfaces and rough, patterned areas creates depth and contrast, highlighting the natural qualities of the clay. Subtle imperfections and deliberate marks tell the story of each piece’s creation, while celebrating the organic nature of the material and the patience required in shaping it. Josh’s pottery blends utility with artistry, transforming everyday vessels into expressive works of beauty and individuality.

I love how this work feels raw and refined all at once!

Subtle, muted color variation really allows the texture to take center stage in Josh’s clay art. Working organically, the material’s raw characteristics—such as its color variations, tactile surface, and malleability—must help guide the creative process. This approach results in pieces that capture imperfections and irregularities that enhance the overall aesthetic.

FINE LACE PLATTER

I’ve found it calming and satisfying to just run my fingers over the fine textures on this platter and the other works on display. Summer is the perfect time to slow down and embrace nature with all it’s perfect imperfections!

Josh considers himself an “accidental ceramacist”. What began as a childhood hobby has evolved into a craft that consumes him. He is a self described texture obsessive that loves being imersed in clay art.
